Food Festival Supports Local Good Causes

An informal presentation ceremony was held at the Town Hall last evening when members of the Devizes Food and Drink Festival organising committee handed over donations for this years good causes.

This year the Festival made donations to

Getting ready - Julias House stall at the 2016 Food Festival Market

In addition to this in 2016, we provided a stall for Julias House Children's Hospice at the Grand Market in May and made a donation to Devizes Budo Club for their help in distributing Festival Programmes to houses in the town.

Approximately 50% of the Festival surplus this year was passed on to local good causes, the rest has been retained to make next year's Food Festival even better and as a reserve for when we have to replace costly items like street banners and our sound system.

Thank you to Martin Walker

A big thank you to our sponsor!

The three year sponsorship of the Devizes Food Festival by Martin Walker, the town's independent  estate agent has now come to an end. We thank Martin for his interest and support which has been greatly valued, a reassurance and encouragement to the Festival team during a difficult transitional period. Thank you Martin!

Details of our new sponsor (sponsors?) will be announced here shortly!

Click on the label below for details of all our numerous other sponsors and supporters without whose help we could not put the festival on.

Catering for the Festival

At the Devizes Food Festival we always try to promote local food and drink related businesses and this year we branched out into a new field by asking outside catering businesses to provide food for two of the events which we organise ourselves.

For the new Majestic Wine and Food Challenge, all the food was provided by
who are based in Royal Wootton Bassett. Lorraine was very helpful to us in meeting our fairly specific ingredient requirements and coping with last minute changes to numbers. They served the food themselves through the evening at intervals perfectly synchronised with the progression of wines being discussed. Those present certainly enjoyed the result!

The Prohibition Party

For the rejuvenated Cocktail evening we had the challenge of equalling the standard of previous years when the food has been provided by a host of local volunteers.

It was Taste Catering of Devizes who stepped up to this particular plate with a selection of inventive canapes that went down a treat on the night.

Although it isn't possible to cater individually for dietary requirements at such big events, both these providers had a responsible approach to food allergies and provided a variety of ingredients in their offerings.

We will probably repeat the experiment next year.

Festival Feedback

On the Bangers and Mash evening
"I was impressed with the quality of the sausages. They were, of course, expertly cooked. The mash was as smooth as could be. I thought the entertainment by the Morris dancers added to the occasion." - RE

On the Market

Above: The Persian Food stall which had a queue of people all day long!

"Congratulations on such a well run and incredibly popular food festival.  All the stall holders near me were very pleased. The Chilli Chuckin Challenge and the Crumpet-Frisbee were both very popular and we got a constant stream of people throughout the day with many people having 2-3 attempts at each contest.  There seemed to be lots of families and it was particularly popular with them, especially as it was free entertainment for the children." - Wacky Nation

"Best one of the 3 we've done to date, best atmosphere too and something to build on next year! I think it starts and finishes too early though, haven't spoken to anyone that disagrees with that!" - The Vaults

Road Works in Long Street - Allow extra time!

NOTE DATE = 2016
Roadworks currently in progress in Long Street mean that Long Street is closed on weekday evenings from 1900 to midnight until Thursday 19th May 2016. There is no through road and no parking on Long Street on these evenings. Pedestrian Access is not restricted.

If you are attending a Festival event on Monday to Thursday you will not be able to drive along Long Street or park there after 7pm. The road will be open at the weekend as normal.

The closed stretch runs from Potterne Road roundabout down to the bottom of Long Street where it meets St John Street and High Street. During the closure it is still possible to drive along High St (past Swan Yard and Wilkinson's) and  turn back up St John Street, past the Town Hall to the Market Place.

The only alternative cross-town route open between Market Place and Potterne Road roundabout is via New Park Street and Gains Lane (back of Sainsburys).

If your planned route would have taken you along Long Street, you are advised to allow extra time to reach your venue and also to find parking, since people who normally park in Long Street at night will be displaced elsewhere.

Did You Know? - The White Bear

http://www.whitebeardevizes.co.uk/gallery/20120529-183116-5.jpg

We are delighted to welcome a fascinating new venue
The White Bear
to the Devizes Food and Drink Festival.

"The White Bear has been an Inn offering hospitality to weary travellers and part of life in Devizes for 450 years. It  is reputed to be the oldest Public House in Devizes and there is a record of a landlord being here since 1567, in Elizabethan era. Originally called The Talbot, legend has it that it became known as The White Bear when a travelling group of entertainers came to town and lodged there with a performing bear. The original market cross was outside the pub in Monday Market Street."
